Using WordPress for a Guild Website
Using WordPress for a Guild Website
Did you know that WordPress powers over 60 million websites on the internet. The ease of access, the massive availability of themes and plugins has made making a website more accessible. The power of WordPress and ease of using plugins to further adding function to your website has made it possible to use this platform to create anything you desire. Whether you want a blog, a portfolio to show you’re your work, an ecommerce website or even a WordPress Gaming website. Yes, that’s right, you can now create a beautiful and creative guild website with ease.
With such easy access to all the features you will ever need from guild hosting providers such as iClanWebsites, Enjin, Shivtr and others then why should you go at it on your own and using WordPress for a guild website.
Let’s see why it is a not only an option but a good one.
The ultimate plan on Enjin is $29.95 per month. This gives you access to all features available at Enjin.com. But for many, $30 a month is too much.
Lets break down the costs.
$29.95 x 12 = $359.40/yr
So to host your Guild website at Enjin including a top level domain will cost you about $371.40 per year.
Now let’s compare to hosting a website with Bluehost and using WordPress
1 year hosting at Hostgator on a shared hosting plan is $3.96 per month
A theme. A theme is a once off purchase that will completely customize the look of your website with a click of a button. There are many WordPress gaming themes available at Themeforest and other theme selling websites. We will use a median cost of a theme of $50.
So the total for using WordPress, Bluehost and a WordPress theme comes to $109.52 for the first year and only $59.52 per year after the first year.
That is quite a price difference.
You can also opt for a free or cheaper plan through most Guild Hosting Providers. It is not a necessity to get the most expensive plan. iClanWebsites have some of the most affordable plans around packed with features.
Most WordPress themes come with an extensive options panel. Giving you the power to change the theme with unlimited color’s, multiple sliders and hundreds of other options. Many themes also come with a drag and drop page builder.
We will use a newly released theme called ‘Youplay’ as an example.

When using a guild hosting provider you are limited as to what your guild hosting provider releases. Although it is safe to say that hosting providers like Enjin and iClanWebsites provide pretty much everything that you will ever need it is up to you, as the Guild Master or Site Developer to decide on the best approach.
However, if you choose the WordPress route you are not limited to the features of the initial theme you purchase. You can purchase plugins for your WordPress website at CodeCanyon or other plugin supplier websites. CodeCanyon has countless plugins that integrate with 99% of themes seamlessly. Acquiring plugins off CodeCanyon will cost you $$ but there is also a free alternative. WordPress.org has a huge range of free WordPress plugins. At the time of writing this article there are 23,137 plugins. As you can imagine between WordPress.org. CodeCanyon and your chosen themes inbuilt functionality the amount of plugins available you can customize your website as much as you possibly want.
For those of you who hold support high when it comes to choosing a Hosting Provider, WordPress theme or anything else that requires you to spend your hard earned dollars then, when purchasing a WordPress theme or plugin there is support available, but not always. Before purchasing anything from ThemeForest, CodeCanyon or any other WordPress sellers it is important to check some details before making ANY purchase. As with purchasing anything online it is important to do your research first.
Start off by following this simple checklist to ensure that you make the right decision and your purchase is going to work.
Author: Check to see if the Author has a portfolio and see what is included. This can give you an insight into the quality of their work.
Comments: Read the comments on the plugin or theme page. They will tell you if the author is supporting his/her product. It will also tell you if there is any issues with the item.
WordPress Compatibility: Make sure the item is compatible with the latest version of WordPress.
Last Update date: Simply put you do not want to buy a theme that is a year old. Now this is just a personal preference of mine and not something you have to follow if you do not want to. WordPress changes and gets updated all the time, and with the coding standards. We are in 2017 at the time of this article, if a themes’ last update was in 2015 I will not even consider it.
These are just a few guidelines I go by. You can take it further and check sales, browser compatibility, developer specific support forum, page speed and anything else you feel is important.
If you have some experience with WordPress or have been living under a rock and have never heard of it before, WordPress can be customized into a beautiful website with the greatest of ease. It is up to the individual user on how far you wish to customize your theme and how much functionality you add.
If you take the time to learn and decide to opt for using WordPress for a guild website then those skills will not just be useful for one website. The knowledge you gain will carry over for future projects. The Envato Network offers you everything you will need to create an amazing guild website on your own.
